If memory serves me, because google can’t come up with the quote, it was John Ciardi’s advice that you shouldn’t become a poet because you have something to say. He said that you should become a poet if you like doing things with words.
I think he would approve of my reasons for painting, even though he was not a fan of abstraction. Painting for me is a form of play, and abstraction allows the play to continue without having “something to say.”
