Chief Operating Officer

Job Summary

In its first 10 years, Cookies for Kids' Cancer has grown to become a $3M+ organization and is preparing for significant organizational growth and development with the recent approval of a strategic plan resulting in five key hires being made at this time, including a Chief Operating Officer. The Board and Executive Director (ED) are looking for a mission-focused, seasoned, strategic, and process-minded leader with experience scaling an organization, leading an executive management team, and developing a performance culture among a group of diverse, talented individuals. This is a new role within the organization, and vital to our growth plans to help raise more funds for research to develop new, improved and less toxic treatments for pediatric cancer.

Key Relationships

The Chief Operating Officer will report to the Executive Director.

This position participates with the Founder, Board of Directors, and Executive Director in charting the direction of the Organization, assuring its accountability to all constituencies, and ensuring its effective operation.

The COO is the internal leader of the Organization.


Leading all internal operations, the COO will be primarily responsible for:

  • Implementing new processes and approaches to implement the Organization's short-term strategic plan and achieve financial and engagement goals
  • Coordinating the annual operations plan and budget
  • Leading the performance management process that measures and evaluates progress against goals for the Organization
  • Providing for all staff a strong day-to-day leadership presence, living and enforcing the Organization's values and culture
  • Leading and managing the organization's senior staff, who have the following responsibilities:
    • Cookie Sales
    • Special Events
    • Grassroots Fundraising
    • Marketing
    • Influencer Engagement & Major Gifts
  • Leading and managing key operational staff, including two finance coordinators and one Database Manager
  • At the request of the Executive Director, work with the Board of Directors to address timely issues


As a prerequisite, the successful candidate must believe in the core values of Cookies for Kids' Cancer and be driven by the mission to raise funds for pediatric cancer research.The candidate should demonstrate a passion for engaging grassroots supporters and inspiring individuals that they can all make a difference and provide hope for children battling cancer.Beyond that, we are seeking a candidate that has proven experience in scaling a multi-site organization and a demonstrated ability to both lead and build the capabilities of a driven, bright, diverse team.

The successful candidate will most likely have had management experience with a for-profit organization. As noted, this is an organization driven by the values of its people, so experience in managing a "values-driven" organization will be highly prized.Additional requirements are:

  • Results-proven track record of exceeding goals and a bottom-line orientation: evidence of the ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment; high level of business acumen including successful P&L management; the ability to balance the delivery of programs against the realities of a budget; and problem solving, project management, and creative resourcefulness
  • Strategic Vision and Agility: ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends, and incorporate them into the Organizational plan
  • Capacity Building: ability to effectively build Organization and staff capacity, developing a top-notch workforce and the processes that ensure the Organization runs smoothly, collaboratively and with the utmost professionalism
  • Leadership and Organization: exceptional capacity for managing and leading people; a team builder who has experience in scaling up organizations; ability to connect staff both on an individual level and in large groups; capacity to enforce accountability, develop and empower top-notch leaders from the bottom up, lead from the top down, cultivate entrepreneurship, and learn the strengths and weaknesses of the team so as to put people in a position to succeed
  • Experience leading through Change: prior experience and success leading an organization through a transition period
  • Action Oriented: enjoys working hard and looks for challenges; able to act and react as necessary, even if limited information is available; not afraid to take charge of a situation; can overcome resistance to leadership and take unpopular stands when necessary
  • General Management: thorough understanding of finance, systems, and HR; broad experience with the full range of business functions and systems, including strategic development and planning, budgeting, business analysis, finance, information systems, human resources, and marketing
  • Solid educational background: undergraduate degree required; MBA or similar advanced degree highly desired


This is an outstanding opportunity for a highly motivated professional to assume a pivotal role in the evolution of a fast-growing, well-loved organization. We are seeking an individual of outstanding quality with a respected track record. Cookies for Kids' Cancer is prepared to offer a very attractive compensation package, including a competitive base salary as well as health, 401(k), and vacation benefits. Salary range $130,000-140,000.

Organization Overview

Founded in 2008, the mission of Cookies for Kids' Cancer is to raise funds for research to develop new, improved and less toxic treatments for pediatric cancer, the one number disease killer of children in the U.S. We provide inspiration and support for individuals, businesses and organizations to raise funds through grassroots and other events. Over the past 10 years, Cookies for Kids' Cancer has granted nearly $15 million (and counting) to childhood cancer research, funding 100 research grants, resulting in more than 40 new treatments now in clinical trial and available to children today.

Revenues: $3 million currently, projected to grow to $5M by 2021.
