Marketing Director


Job Summary

In its first 10 years, Cookies for Kids’ Cancer has grown to become a $3M+ organization, and is preparing for significant organizational growth and development with the recent approval of a strategic plan resulting in four key hires being made at this time, including a seasoned, passionate and creative Marketing Director to help ensure financial goals are met. Cookies for Kids’ Cancer seeks an experienced Marketing Director to lead communications that will support the organization’s exponential growth plans. Founded in 2008, the organization has supported over 8,500 grassroots events to raise funds for pediatric cancer research and inspired tens of thousands of individual supporters to join the “good cookie” movement.

The Marketing Director is responsible for planning, development and implementation of all the Organization’s marketing strategies, marketing communications, and public relations activities. In this role, the Marketing Director will direct the efforts of the marketing, communications and public relations support teams and coordinate at the strategic and tactical levels with the other functions of the Organization. This is a new position within the Organization.


Key Relationships

The Marketing Director reports to the Chief Operating Officer.

This position participates with the Founder, Executive Director and other management staff in charting the direction of the Organization, assuring its accountability to all constituencies, and ensuring its effective operation.

Within the Organization, the position has primary working relationships with the Founder, Cookies Sales Lead, Grassroots Events lead, the senior management team, staff of the Marketing / Communications / PR function(which could be on - staff or external consultants), and PR service providers. Outside the organization, the position coordinates, primarily, with the media.

Specific Job Duties


Communications Vision, Strategy & Leadership

  • Create an integrated marketing and communications plan to support brand awareness for the Organization and audience growth (incorporating Cookies’ website, email, and social media audiences). Included in that plan will be a primary focus of driving awareness of and engagement in “Good Cookie” Sales & Grassroots Events
  • Own the organization’s external and internal communications “voices” – develop messaging strategies and work with others within and outside of the organization to ensure that their communications (speeches, printed materials, digital and social postings, videos, etc.) are in line with Cookies’ messaging.
  • Oversee the organization’s brand to ensure consistent and appropriate use in all channels and on all materials.
  • Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the Organization. Work with leadership team and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them
  • Understand other similar organizations and recommend approaches for non-profit fundraising, cookie and product sales, and messaging to distinguish Cookies for Kids’ Cancer and maximize fundraising (in line with the strategic plan).
  • Serve as communications counselor to Cookies’ leadership
Marketing and Communications Operations
  • PR team management, overseeing the Organization’s PR firm and its support of Cookies’ communications strategy
  • Media relations, managing the organization’s relationships with existing media outlets and help develop additional strategic media relationships that support the Organization’s goals and growth
  • Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations, and other supporting material as needed
  • Actively engage, cultivate and manage press relationships to ensure coverage surrounding Cookies’ programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects
  • Leverage the Organization’s Founder for Thought Leadership, securing her participation in strategic speaking events and conferences
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the marketing and communications function including budgeting, planning, and staff development
  • Manage all digital and social communications by providing direction to and supervising staff who create and publish eBlasts, social media, newsletters, etc.
    • Use Google Analytics to provide insight into internet strategies and analyze social media to understand ways to optimize its use.
    • Implement SEO strategy to maximize web opportunities
Team Development/Management and Organizational Support
  • Partner with the VP of Cookie Sales, Grassroots Events and Organizational Events leads to support their efforts to maximize revenue attributable to their efforts.
    • Create and execute marketing/sales promotions and other opportunities to boost cookie sales and Grassroots Events
  • Recruit and manage a communications team to support the development and execution of the communications strategy (as budget permits – perhaps not in the short term)
  • Ensure that all communications with Cookies’ email and direct mail audiences and on Cookies’ website support strategic planning goals to broaden awareness and maximize opportunities (including cookie sales, Grassroots Events, and other opportunities).
  • Recommend additional marketing support staff and resources as needed to meet Cookies’ financial goals
Product Offering
  • Evaluate Cookies’ assortment of products offered (primarily cookies) and determine the optimal direction for pricing, packaging, distribution, flavors, recipes based on sales patterns, future opportunities, seasonality and other factors to be determined.


Qualifications


Required:

  • Demonstrated skills, knowledge and experience in the design and execution of marketing, communications and public relations activities that lead to financial and sales/fundraising growth
  • Strong creative, strategic, analytical, organizational and personal sales skills
  • Experience developing and managing marketing budgets
  • Experience hiring, training, developing, supervising and appraising marketing/social media personnel
  • Demonstrated successful experience writing press releases, making presentations and negotiating with media
  • Experience overseeing the design and production of print and digital materials and publications
  • Digital literacy
  • Commitment to working with shared leadership and in cross-functional teams
  • Superior oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at a time
Other:
  • Minimum of 10 years experience in marketing, communications or public relations with demonstrated success supporting brand sales/fundraising efforts
  • Experience in product or packaged goods marketing is a plus
  • Bachelors degree in journalism, marketing, public relations preferred
  • Graduate degree in a related field is desirable
  • Experience working with volunteers is desirable


Compensation

This is an outstanding opportunity for a highly motivated professional to assume a pivotal role in the evolution of a fast-growing, well-loved organization. We are seeking an individual of outstanding quality with a respected track record. Cookies for Kids’ Cancer is prepared to offer a very attractive compensation package, including a competitive base salary as well as health, 401(k), and vacation benefits. Salary range $85,000-100,000.

Founded in 2008, the mission of Cookies for Kids' Cancer is to raise funds for research to develop new, improved and less toxic treatments for pediatric cancer, the one number disease killer of children in the U.S. We provide inspiration and support for individuals, businesses and organizations to raise funds through grassroots and other events. Over the past 10 years, Cookies for Kids’ Cancer has granted nearly $15 million (and counting) to childhood cancer research, funding 100 research grants, resulting in more than 40 new treatments now in clinical trial and available to children today.

Revenues: $3 million currently, projected to grow to $5M by 2021.
