Inside the Internship: What It’s Like to Work with Cookies for Kids’ Cancer

More than two years ago, Cookies for Kids’ Cancer expanded its internship program further than ever before, welcoming a new generation of passionate changemakers into the organization. In June 2024, a dynamic cohort of interns stepped into roles across multiple departments, bringing fresh ideas, creativity and heart to the mission throughout the summer. What began as a seasonal opportunity quickly grew into something far more meaningful. Four interns chose to continue their journey with Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, with two remaining as interns and two stepping into full-time positions, a testament to the impact of both the experience and the people behind it.

Today, we’re spotlighting interns Mya and Taylor as they share what it means to be part of the Cookies for Kids’ Cancer team and how this experience has shaped both their personal and professional journeys while helping advance the fight against pediatric cancer.

Mya

“Working with Cookies for Kids’ Cancer has been such a rewarding experience. I started as a social media intern and have loved getting to contribute creatively while also supporting such an important mission. From creating content to helping with campaigns and events, I’ve learned so much about nonprofit marketing and storytelling.

Some of my favorite experiences have been traveling to Charlotte and New York for our Chefs for Kids’ Cancer events and getting to see our work come to life in real time. I also loved participating in the Good Cookie Challenge with my mom, which made the mission feel even more personal and meaningful. Being part of such a passionate and supportive team has made this experience incredibly special, and it has helped me grow both professionally and personally.

Taylor

“I started with Cookies for Kids’ Cancer the summer after my freshman year of college as an event management intern. Since then, I have bounced around to different departments including donor relations, social media, marketing and public relations. No matter what role I’m in, I have always felt welcomed and supported. That’s one of my favorite things about the Cookies team. The way everyone constantly builds each other up. As an intern, I feel comfortable approaching any team member with questions or for guidance, and that level of support is something truly special.

Another thing that stands out about Cookies for Kids’ Cancer is the mission and everyone’s dedication to it. As a childhood cancer survivor myself, continuing to advocate and fundraise for kids with cancer through my work has been incredibly meaningful. Seeing each team member’s commitment to helping children and families affected by cancer is both heartwarming and inspiring. Working with Cookies for Kids’ Cancer has shown me what it truly looks like when a group of people come together to make a difference.”

As Cookies for Kids’ Cancer continues to grow, so does its internship program. This summer, the organization welcomed a new group of interns across a variety of departments, creating even more opportunities for students to learn, grow and contribute to our mission. While each intern brings different experiences and interests to the team, they all become part of a community centered around purpose and impact.

Through every project, event and conversation, interns gain a firsthand look at what it means to support children and families affected by pediatric cancer. At the heart of it all is a team united by compassion, collaboration and a shared commitment to making a difference.
